Devotional for Day 39 – 13 Sept 2013
Daniel Lim, International House of Prayer Kansas City
Intention: To embrace the compassionate heart of Jesus and His vision for the harvest.
Scripture: Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest (Matthew 9:35-38 NKJV).
Reflection: Prayer and the works of the great commission are two inseparable realities in the heart of God. Jesus’ vision for the lost multitude produced a deep compassion and cry within His being. Out of the depths of His heart, came one of the most gracious commandments; the commandment “to pray”. Through this event in Matthew 9, we received the revelation of another crucial name of God; i.e. the Lord of the Harvest. Our Lord is the Lord of the Harvest. He always set His eyes on the harvest and has all the strategy for the harvest, including the power, the time and the personnel. He simply commanded us to identify with His compassionate heart for the lost and to enter into the pre-eminent works of prayer; works of prayer that produce more laborers in the harvest fields. The burden for a billion souls to be harvested into His glorious kingdom is burning in His heart. We need to catch that fire through prayer and active participation with the Holy Spirit in the works of the harvest. When we pray “Lord of the Harvest, send forth laborers”, often we become the answer to our prayers. We become the sent one along with others who are sent.
Prayer: Lord of the Harvest, the harvest is so plentiful but the laborers are so few. Lord of the Harvest, send forth laborers from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth, from the ends of the earth back to Jerusalem. Send forth laborers with all kinds of spiritual gifts. Here am I, send me too. In Jesus name, Amen!
[Blogger’s Comment: I will be very brief in this blog as you have much to think about in preparing for the International Day of Repentance tomorrow. See the details in the last bog or in this Christian Breaking News from 9/11/13. It was released by Pastor Jeff Daly of the American National Day of Repentance who was the spark that led to this Billion Souls Revival Prayer Call. On New Year’s Eve 2012, Pastor Jeff was in Australia praying in our nation’s capital. He then organised prayer in USA to support our National Day of Prayer and Fasting on 10 February 2013. In response, our team initiated a 72-hour global prayer call for the USA from 30 April to 2 May (their National Day of Repentance and National Day of Prayer). The amazing results of partnering in prayer then led to a unanimous decision of 19 international prayer leaders to launch this global prayer call. Thank you Pastor Jeff.
I encourage you to return to the devotions as part of the ‘What Next?’ after the 40 days especially those under the categories of Unreached, Missions, and Salvation of Souls. Each one has many links to use to learn more about the world and God’s work in it.
When we ‘know’, our heart of compassion will be expanded and we will be even more motivated to ‘pray, give and go’.
The use of the word ‘harvest’ in Scripture is also something you might like to investigate. Ray Stedman, a noted writer and Bible teacher on his website “Authentic Christianity” has over 100 articles on ‘harvest’ as found in the Bible. Happy searching! MR]
Jesus often prayed in the Scripture but the only actual ‘prayer point’ he ever gave was this. So as we continue to pray today, let’s make it a habit of our prayer life to pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.
- Pray for a worldwide outpouring of the Holy Spirit for revival and transformation of the nations of the world.
- Pray for a billion people to find Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
- Pray for an end to abortion and for God to turn back the tide of death and immorality that is sweeping the nations of the world.
- Pray for a multiplication of prayer, praise and worship to God across the world as never before, to bring great glory to God.
