Devotional for Day 38 – 12 Sept 2013
Intention: To share in God’s grief and love and allow that grief and love to spur us to prayer and action.
Scripture: And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart… The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence (Genesis 6:5-6, 11 KJV).
Reflection: I often think of these verses in Genesis and how God’s heart was grieved when he looked upon the earth which was full of violence and wickedness because every imagination of man’s heart was evil.
I was so grief-stricken I went up to a mountain that overlooks my city and cried for 2 hours. That movie showed an abortion on ultrasound. You could see the baby trying to get away from the suction tube on the screen. I could not imagine the evil that had so filled our hearts that we, the world over, could legalise such a barbaric practice. Worse still was that this terminal act of violence was conducted against the most innocent and defenceless of human beings.
The womb has now become the most dangerous place for a human being to exist. Each year 44 million children suffer this terminal act of violence. Only four babies out of five make it out of the womb alive. In the three minutes it has taken you read this devotion, another 240 babies have been killed.
So let us join together in asking God for forgiveness and cleansing for our silence as Christians on this issue and for the healing of our land. The Billions Souls Revival Prayer Call is an ‘imagination for righteousness’ because we can make a difference when we pray together.
Prayer: Father in Heaven, you love us and you are not willing that anyone should perish. You are grieved with our violence and wickedness. We are made in your image and we should not destroy each other – much less the innocent children that are yet to be born. Lord forgive us for the sin of silence. Bring an end to abortion and turn back the tide of death and immorality that is sweeping the nations of the world. In Jesus’ Name. Amen!
[Blogger’s Comment: Today Warwick’s devotion is very sobering. It expresses a burden he has carried for many years. Others around the world carry similar burdens that have birthed remarkable prayer movements. Remember I told the story of Bound4Life in Day 29’s devotion. These were birthed by God with a strong focus on ending abortion.and
After reading the devotion, I read the closing chapter in “A House that Contends” by Lou Engel and Sam Cerny (both leaders in these movements). I was deeply challenged. It is so relevant to today’s devotion and our preparation for Day 40, the International Day of Repentance, that I will quote sections and allow them to speak to you too.
“Prayer far from being an escape from action, is actually the forerunner and impetus for action, service and being sent out. Prayer is the force and the foundation of all effective ministry. The church has been big on doing and little on praying. Could it be that our lack of fruitfulness and effectiveness is because we have put the cart before the horse?
I will never forget the night our company, who had been praying for two years for the ending of abortion, was suddenly apprehended by the vision and call of adopting babies as the answer to our prayers. From that point on we have been in an adoption whirlwind. The Call has sought to mobilize adoptions of newborns and children in the foster care system. Furthermore, a foundation for funding of adoptions was started and an adoption agency established.
When Jesus moves His people to pray, their hearts are broken, and then they are sent as the very answers to their prayers. This is the heavenly pattern. The contending house of prayer must lead the parade of history in acts of justice and compassion. In fact it is the praying church that God uses to create whirlwind movements of justice and mission that change the world.
The great civil rights movements of the 1950’s and 1960’s could really be said to have sprung from the African American prayer movement where millions cried to God for freedom and liberty from oppression. God heard and sent forth voices like Martin Luther King, Jr.
Jesus said that His house would be a house of prayer for all nations. Across the world there is a rising prayer movement like has never been seen. Consider the stadiums filled with solemn assemblies, the prayer furnaces burning in universities across the country, the ten years of day and night prayer in Kansas City and other places of the earth, and the extended fasting and prayer spreading everywhere. And now God is emphasizing the raising up of contending prayer in every sphere of influence and over every mountain of authority.
Principalities and powers are being challenged, rulers and judges are being shaken, and souls are being ripped out of Satan’s talons [including the innocent unborn]. You are being summoned into a prayer revolution that will shake the thrones of iniquity and prepare the way for the ultimate throne, the eternal reign of Christ.
What is your response today?
Read If your heart isn’t broken you’re not paying attention – a blog from Bound4Life. It concludes with these words, “Remember the millions of women in China being forced to abort their babies, and think of the hearts of individual women being broken.” This is a stark contrast to today’s image of a Chinese mother and her joy over her baby.
