Devotional for Day 18 – 23 August 2013
Intention: We, as the people of God, need to know and use our power and authority over evil that was given to us by Jesus.
Scripture: I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you (Luke 10:19 NIV).
Reflection: Spiritually speaking, life is a battlefield. Most of the battles that we fight are not “of the flesh”, meaning they don’t have to do with things in the natural, but instead, they are spiritual battles (Ephesians 6:12).
As soldiers of Christ, God gives us spiritual armour and weapons (Ephesians 6:13-18) and he gives us the power to use them. In this passage in Luke, serpents and scorpions are symbolic of evil spirits. No matter what we face, we can be encouraged that through Christ, we have authority and dominion over every negative influence and all spiritual powers that we encounter. Jesus has given us authority “to overcome all the power of the enemy”.
In India we face many challenges – over 600 million people live in deep poverty, Christian workers face persecution in some districts, sexual immorality has resulted in a HIV/AIDS epidemic, the caste system holds people in bondage, child labour is increasing, youth are growing up without hope and over 1 billion are without Christ. There are so many strongholds that we need to address in the power and authority of Jesus.
So church leaders and members, now is the time to stand in the gap and resist the devil (James 4:7) in the power and authority that Jesus has given the people of God. In these 40 days we must straighten our armour and sharpen our weapons and enter the battlefield for the saving of a billion souls.
Prayer: Dear God, I thank you for the victorious life, death, resurrection and glorious ascension of Jesus that has brought me into a right relationship with you. I pray that your presence will be strong in my life and that I will minister to those in need with the power and authority of Jesus. May my life bring glory to you.
Forgive me for times I have allowed fear or lack of willingness to cause me to shrink back from the spiritual battle. I pray that your power be made manifest in my life and that, in the name of Jesus, I will demolish strongholds of the enemy. Thank you for the confidence of knowing that you are for me and are always with me. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
[Blogger’s Comment: I have underlined the words power and authority in Shibu’s devotion today. We use the term ‘spiritual warfare’ but we could equally talk about ‘the power and authority of Jesus’. This is a topic that we all have much to learn about. I encourage you to do your own internet search by typing key words into your search engine. Study Ephesians 6:10-18 in this way too. Here are some sites to help you get started.
In the book of Acts, we see any advance of the Kingdom of God was met with a direct counterattack from Satan. So be aware of this as you continue in this time of prayer, fasting and repentance. This may be through opposition, persecution, discouragement, disunity, extremes, pride etc. Get strength from the Lord and your Christian friends; resist distractions that divert you from your focus; know your weakest area and be prepared; claim the blood of Jesus Christ to defeat the enemy; don’t be self-confident but say “The Lord rebuke you!” (Jude 9) and, above all, claim the victory that is already yours for “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
Let’s join with others around the world to pray in the power and authority of Jesus our 4 main prayer points for India today. (Our second largest group of Facebook followers are from India, not far behind Indonesia! So you will be standing with them today).
- Pray for a worldwide outpouring of the Holy Spirit for revival and transformation in India. Ask God to equip and use the estimated 100 million Christians there and the 80,000+ missionaries working cross-culturally in their own country.
- Pray for 1 billion souls in India lost in Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and other religions to find Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour (not just another of the many gods).
- Pray for an end to abortion and for God to turn back the tide of death and immorality that is sweeping India. Pray for the estimated 60 million babies killed, aborted or abandoned simply because “It’s a Girl!”. Resist the stronghold that degrades and exploits women and girls.
- Praise God that the Church in India is growing at a rate of nearly 6%. Pray for a multiplication of prayer, praise and worship to God in India and through them around the world as never before, to bring great glory to God.
