Devotional for Day 25 – 30 August 2013
Sam Cerny, Antioch Center for Training and Sending, Kansas City, USA
Intention: Let us remember that our prayers are already based on Biblical promises of assured victory!
Scripture: And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly Romans 16:20 (NKJV).
Reflection: Satan will be crushed. God will do it, but not without us, for under our feet he will be shattered. Clearly, there will be a final, global fulfillment of this prophecy at the end of the age. But within the overall context of Romans 16:17-20, it is likely that Paul was referring to a partial, local fulfillment in Rome as well. He had just finished describing the divisions, false doctrines and deceptions that were invading the church at Rome, and Paul seemed to be attributing these assaults not just to wicked men but to Satan himself. Through His Church, though, God would enforce His power, authority and victory over the accuser.
If our mission is to exalt the Lord everywhere we go, then certainly we will be enforcing the devil’s defeat everywhere our feet step as well. Thus let us crush with confidence! Years ago we led a prayer team from IHOP and YWAM to Culiacan, a city in Mexico. We stayed in a cheap, dirty hotel in a ghetto part of the city. On our last morning there, one of the missionaries with YWAM was walking by the owner of the hotel, and in that moment he heard the Lord say, “It’s time.” So he and two others started talking with her.
She said that she had reached a point of desperation, was on the verge of losing the hotel due to financial problems, and also sensed a deep need in her life spiritually. She mentioned that the fifth floor of the hotel was haunted by evil spirits, and the previous day she was in a room on that floor. Suddenly, she felt a hand brush up against her neck and pull her hair. Knowing that it was a demon, she was very afraid. At the same time, though not a Christian, she knew she needed help from God and actually cried out to Him in that moment. After hearing her story, the three missionaries shared the gospel with her, and afterwards she prayed with them to receive Jesus into her life. Truly our assignment in the nations is “to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God” (Acts 26:18 NKJV).
Prayer: Lord, you are highly exalted, far above all principalities and powers and might and dominion.
All authority in heaven and on earth is yours. We are calling upon you today to stretch forth your hand of power and deliver those imprisoned in darkness. Set those free who are trapped in the abortion industry, in sex trafficking, in false religions and false ideologies. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
[Blogger’s Comment: Last night we had the pleasure of meeting, and listening to the teaching of, Sam Cerny here in Brisbane, Australia! Sam teaches at ACTS School which is associated with IHOP University and . He gave a simple soundly Biblical message on the topic of Prayer and Spiritual Warfare from one verse, Romans 15:30. Following the pattern he used in his devotion today, he quoted 3 times several phrases from that verse, taught what Paul was saying and then told a story from his days as a missionary in Asia to illustrate the truth. I wish you could have been there too! All of you who preach the Word of God, what a great model to you to follow.

Afterwards we purchased a copy of “A House That Contends: A Look at the Apostle Paul and the Prayer Movement” by Lou Engel (of The CALL) and Sam Cerny. Hear Lou Engel speak about the book here. Chapter 2, by Sam, is titled ‘Join Me in the Arena’ and expounds Romans 15:30.
Now I beg you, brethren,
through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit,
that you strive together with me
in prayers to God for me.
His 3 points last night were,
- we, like Paul, are to be participators not spectators in the battle arena,
- we have the Word of God as our sword, the key to winning the battle, and
- we need to humbly depend on God and the prayers of others to fulfill our destiny in the Lord.
At the end of the meeting we did exactly that and prayed for each other for spiritual breakthroughs in our lives. POWERFUL! We will be hearing him again tonight and tomorrow at an all-day Pro-life Conference in Brisbane where we plan to give copies of the devotions specifically dealing with the horrible injustice of abortion to the participants.
Here are some Scripture to help you to pray. These are from Pastor Glen Vines (who had worked with Sam Cerny in Asia and invited him to Brisbane). These verses were part of his devotion he wrote for this global prayer call (but we couldn’t use all those we received).
Pray with boldness and confidence in the power and authority you have in Jesus Christ, the Victor!
- Pray for a worldwide outpouring of the Holy Spirit for revival and transformation of the nations of the world.
- Pray for a billion people to find Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
- Pray for an end to abortion and for God to turn back the tide of death and immorality that is sweeping the nations of the world.
- Pray for a multiplication of prayer, praise and worship to God across the world as never before, to bring great glory to God.
